Recap: The 67th Annual Affair of the Heart Luncheon and Fashion Show In DC
One of the oldest but most loved annual charity fund-raising events in DC, An Affair of the Heart Luncheon and Fashion Show took place as it has for many years at The Marriott Wardman Park Hotel this past Monday, February 9, 2015. Ladies adorned in brilliant shades of red joined together to support The American Heart Association in their fight against heart disease and stroke which is the number-one killer among women, and to raise awareness of cardiovascular health issues among women. For over six decades, women of DC have attended An Affair of the Heart Luncheon and Fashion Show to show their support for the cause.
The Women’s Board, comprised of almost 100 volunteer members along with Chairman Ellen Chapline Kay, and C0-Vice Chairman Katherine Vernot-Jonas and Frances J. Railey kicked off the festive event at the VIP reception in the Virginia Room where guest mingled, drank cocktails, and took photos in front of the step-and-repeat.
The luncheon and fashion show took place in the grand ballroom where over a 1,000+ guests dined on a lavish three-course lunch including a cucumber bouquet salad of citrus, pomegranate seeds, and toasted sesame goat cheese; lemon beurre blanc chicken breast with risotto cake, butternut squash, and honey ginger glazed carrots, and for dessert a trio of creme caramel, raspberry mousse on meringue, and dark chocolate pave. Mistresses of Ceremonies Alison Starling and Autria Godfrey from ABC7/WJLA-TV were gracious and articulate as they introduced the honored guests, including Reverend Monsignor Peter Vaghhi, GM of Bloomingdales Chevy Chase Susan Cannaday, Frances J. Railey, Katherine Vernot-Jonas, Ellen Chapline Kay, and CEO of The American Heart Association Nancy Brown. A heartfelt video to the audience from Bret Baier shared his son’s journey and fight against congenital heart disease along with Dr. Richard Jonas who spoke about the importance of research in this field.
Models from THE Artist Agency strutted and sashayed down the runway in the latest Spring fashions from Bloomingdales including designs from Ted Baker, MaxMara, Tory Burch, Eileen Fisher, DKNY, Riess, Aqua and Dylan Gray. Bloomingdales Chevy Chase also held a special shopping event on Saturday, February 14 from noon-4pm where 10% of the proceeds went directly to Affair of the Heart.
An Affair of the Heart attendees along with corporate sponsors including this year’s, Marriott, MedStar Heart Institute, Capitol File Magazine, and Glanz TV, have raised $6.3 million over the past thirteen years to fund substantial American Heart Association research grants from esteemed institutions in the region. This year, Affair of the Heart honored seven new grant recipients whose dedication, knowledge, and perseverance inspired us all in the hopes of finding a heart disease cure.
