Created 14 years ago, NBF is an annual celebration of books, reading and literature. Last year alone, an estimated 200,000 book-lovers gathered on the National Mall for the first-ever two-day National Book Festival.
Responding to last year’s success, the Festival will once again be a two day festivity, Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23.
But the Library of Congress can’t pull off such an amazing festival as this alone. For that they have hundreds of volunteers – namely the Junior League of Washington(JLW).
JLW will kick off its centennial year by playing a major role at the NBF, providing more than 550 member volunteers to staff the event for the eleventh consecutive year. In 1999, the JLW established literacy as its focus area and stated, “The Junior League of Washington will strive to lead, coordinate and support programs in the metropolitan Washington, DC area that enhance the literacy skills in the community.” Supporting the National Book Festival is a natural extension of the JLW’s focus on literacy.

They’ll join the Library of Congress and together, they’ll pull off one of the most exciting family-friendly events D.C. has to offer.
The 2012 National Book Festival will feature award-winning authors, poets and illustrators in several pavilions dedicated to various categories of literature. Festival attendees can meet and hear firsthand from their favorite authors, get books signed, have photos taken with mascots and storybook characters, and participate in a variety of learning activities.
With such an exciting roster planned, the festival promises once again to draw ten of thousands of attendees!
