FAIR Girls Pearls Of Purpose Gala Features Ugandan Trafficking Survivors
After being trafficked at the age of 16 and forced to work as a domestic slave, Teopistar Katusiime escaped and found help. Just two years later, Teopistar is a survivor and works as a workshop facilitator and mentor in FAIR Girls’ JewelGirls program in Kampala, where she uses her story of survival to educate her peers on how to avoid and overcome situations of human trafficking. In her first trip to the United States, Teopistar will share her inspirational story at FAIR Girls’ 6th annual Pearls of Purpose Gala on April 3, at the Carnegie Institution of Science.
At Pearls of Purpose, more than 200 guests will show their support for FAIR Girls’ mission to prevent exploitation through the education and empowerment of girls. The evening program will include speakers Tina Tchen, Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the First Lady, and Executive Director of the White House Council on Women and Girls; Teopistar Katusiime, Ugandan survivor of trafficking; Asia Graves, American survivor of trafficking; and Andrea Powell, FAIR Girls Executive Director.
Honorary hosts include Senators Kristen Gillibrand and Mary Landrieu, Congresswomen Karen Bass, Donna Edwards, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Carolyn Maloney, Jan Schakowsky, and Jackie Speier, and Congressman Elijah Cummings.
Funds raised through ticket sales and a silent auction will go toward assisting victims of trafficking and high-risk youth in FAIR Girls’ education and empowerment programs. Attendees can expect a robust silent auction featuring items such as tickets to sold-out concerts and sporting events, autographed sports memorabilia, and couture handbags.
Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, Georgetown Cupcakes, eco-friendly cocktails by VeeV Açai Spirit, wine and champagne. The popular WSOP Jazz Quartet will play live music and a special presentation of empowerment jewelry by the DC JewelGirls will be available for purchase. Event sponsors include Boise, Schiller, & Flexner LLP, Mr. & Mrs. Jonathan Terrell, eco-friendly cocktails by VeeV Açai Spirit, A2 Unlimited, Safeway, the Eurasia Group and many more.
