The Capital City Ball was founded in 2007 by a group of DC area professionals who wanted to simultaneously throw an annual high-caliber black tie event (which takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving) and to use the proceeds from that event and other benefits throughout the year to fight human trafficking.
It seems incredible that human trafficking and slavery could still be going on today, but this barbaric practice didn’t end in some distant time or place. It’s going on right now, and in our own cities. The Capital City Ball attempts to end the presence of slavery in Washington DC, through generous donations as well as raising awareness.
HIPS has a variety of programs for individuals engaging in sex work, including outreach and mobile education, peer education, client advocacy, and community development and education. Using a harm reduction model, HIPS strives to address the impact that sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, discrimination, poverty, drugs, and violence have on the lives of individuals engaging in sex work. In 2008, I launched AskMissA.com which grew from my personal blog into a site with 700 writers, covering the intersection of charity & lifestyle in 20 U.S. cities. With Charity + Life, I am going back to a personal blog where I can share my favorite things, and continue to shine a light on nonprofits, and cause marketing campaigns to inspire others to give as they live.
