4:30 Wedding Attire

4:30 Wedding Attire

Dear Miss A,

I have been invited to a 4:30 p.m. wedding and do not know what to wear. All the other weddings I’ve ever been to have been around 6:00 p.m. It is the second wedding for both the bride and the groom, which confuses things even more for me. This family always dresses to the hilt. Help!

Dear Perplexed,

Thank you so much for writing in. The fact that this is a second wedding for both the bride and groom doesn’t tell me much, as depending on the families involved, a second wedding for one couple may be far more elaborate than another couple’s first wedding. Since you mention that this family “dresses to the hilt,” I’m going to assume they won’t be having a super casual wedding.

As society breaks from tradition more and more — not only in wedding attire but business attire — deciding what to wear can be much more challenging. Tossing the rules of etiquette aside is both liberating, and confusing as there are so many more options available. I lean toward the traditional, so since this wedding is after 4:00 p.m. and is a late afternoon wedding, you want to be dressier than a daytime wedding, but not as dressy as a weddin

g taking placed after 6:00 p.m. I know that some are wearing the LBD (little black dress) to weddings these days, but I still think black is not appropriate for a wedding. If it’s a print which happens to have black in it, then that’s different. White and cream are also not appropriate in my opinion. I love a “little lady suit,” and think a dressy skirt suit is perfect for a 4:30 p.m. wedding. You could also wear dress in a more formal fabric, but leave off the beading or other such details which are more fitting for an after 6:00 p.m. wedding. I’ve included some photos to inspire you.

If you don’t have something like this in your wardrobe, I highly recommend you add it to your collection. Saks and Neimans have great sales. Remember it is always better to shop when you aren’t under the gun of having to find something for an event, as you can be a smarter shopper. There are key pieces you should just have on hand, so you don’t have to run to the store in a frenzy.
