Miss A’s Fave: Shampoo
I recommend a number of expensive products and treatments on charityandlife.com, but I also like to point out where you can save money. While I think it’s important to invest in hair cuts, highlights, and other services as a great salon, with shampoo I’m going to tell you to go with what you can afford. I have always thought that shampoo made very little difference, as it is washed out and goes right down the drain. According to a Consumer Reports study, this is true. There is very little difference in shampoos. After shampooing your hair with any shampoo, your hair will be cleaner, which is the point. If you are buying shampoo to protect your hair color from fading, you would be better off wearing a hat and staying out of the sun as it’s the UV rays which do the most damage to hair color. If you are looking to condition your dry and damaged hair, look to conditioners — not shampoos. If you are looking for more body and volume, look to hair styling products and lighter conditioners — again, not shampoo. During the worst of the recession and starting my own business, I used Suave Professionals Humectant shampoo, which costs a little over a dollar and worked great. More recently, I switched to Neutrogena Triple Moisture shampoo and conditioner, and I have to say it reminded me a lot of Kerastase Nutritive.
That said, sometimes we as women may know something to be true, but we don’t act on it. I know I am guilty of this. Even if our hair hasn’t been, perhaps we have been conditioned to by these advertising and marketing campaigns for so long that we really can’t help ourselves. We want to believe our hair stylist when they say a product is going to work for us. We want desperately to believe. Or perhaps, it’s that the sense of smell can bring back such powerful memories. It’s the way, a particular perfume can make you think of time spent with your grandmother, or a particular cologne can bring back a flood of memories of an ex-boyfriend, the smell of the woods after the rain can remind you of summer camp, and fresh cut grass reminds you of the carefree days of summertime as a child. If you’re like me you’ve switched perfumes many times over the years, and certain ones can bring you back to a particular time in your life. This is why I recently bought Aveda’s Brilliant shampoo and conditioner, and was sad to discover that they no longer make the Cherry Almond Bark, a scent I loved so much. It’s not that I think my hair will be cleaner or better conditioned with this set, but I know my hair will smell amazing and that is how I want my hair to smell. I don’t want my hair to smell like apples or coconut, I want it to smell like Brilliant. And perhaps that is reason enough to buy shampoo. If they are all basically the same, maybe it’s about the way it makes you feel.
