Congressman Cummings And Others On The Hill Attend Screening Of Healthy Town Detroit
This past Friday, Bill Couzens, Founder of Less Cancer and Holli Thompson, Documentary Host and Founder of Nutritional Style hosted a viewing of Healthy Town Detroit on Capitol Hill. Healthy Town Detroit is the first film in a series focusing on social entrepreneurs in communities throughout the United States. The documentary covers organizations working to bridge the numerous environmental health gaps in Detroit through prevention. The film features Earthworks Urban Farm at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Local Motion Green, Children’s Hospital of Michigan, the Kresge Foundation, and Kids Kicking Cancer. Healthy Town’s mission is to educate and increase awareness for healthy choices to include nutrition and preventable harmful environmental exposures in homes, schools, and work places. Exposures are identified based on research and warnings from current sound science of leading experts in the fields of cancer, human health, and the environment. The film series is part of the New Healthy Town Campaign from Next Generation Choices Foundation known for their Less Cancer campaign. Next Generation Choices Foundation’s first project was to reduce harmful pesticide exposures in Virginia Schools. The organization was recognized for its collaboration with the State of Virginia on recommendations to reduce pesticide drift from health effected communities – primarily schools.
They had two screens, both of which were packed. Bill and Holli both spoke to the audience before introducing the film. Since this documentary featured Detroit, there was a large turn out from the Michigan delegation, but also many from other areas of the country such as Maryland’s Congressman Elijah E. Cummings and staff from Virginia Congressman Frank R. Wolf’s office. I think it’s marvelous that so many who work on the Hill are interested in this important issue.
