Diva On A Dime: Makeup Artists

Debra O’Malley, Makeup Artist for Yves Saint Laurent at Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase with Andrea Rodgers

This is the first article in my new series, “Diva On A Dime”. I will give you tips on how to save money, and look your best. Being a socialite in Washington, is much different from being a socialite in New York. Washington is much more inclusive. For instance the Junior League of Washington has an open membership policy. You don’t have to have letters of recommendation–they accept anyone who wants to work and volunteer. This is one reason why I love Washington. It’s seems to live up to the values that this nation was founded on such as equality, hard work, and embracing people from all different backgrounds.

In Washington, we not only play hard, we tend to work hard. My point in bringing this up, is that not all “DC socialites” are independently wealthy. We go through financial up’s and down’s. Whether it’s a layoff, being dumped by a Sugar Daddy, or losing favor with your real Daddy, many girls on the charity circuit in Washington need to save their pennys. Some don’t, but the majority do. Even those trying to live off a trust fund need to make the most of what they have coming in.

If you want your makeup to look fabulous for a special night out, consider going to the makeup counter at Saks, Neimans, Bloomingdales or Nordstrom to have your makeup done. No sense paying $100 or more to have your makeup done at a Salon! Save your money, girls. Buying a lipstick or a new shade of eyeshadow costs much less than paying for a makeup artist AND you’ll have something tangible leftover after your event.

This past Saturday, I went to Saks in Chevy Chase, and had my makeup done for the p.i.n.k. Christmas Party by Debra O’Malley. She’s so talented, and as we got to talking, I found out that she is friends with my dear friend Maggie Sprague! That’s another thing I love about Washington. It’s a small town, and it’s not snooty.  I highly recommend Debra! She’s so much fun! If you’re interested in making an appointment with her, just call her at 240-497-5258 or email her at debra_omalley@s5a.com.

In 2008, I launched AskMissA.com which grew from my personal blog into a site with 700 writers, covering the intersection of charity & lifestyle in 20 U.S. cities. With Charity + Life, I am going back to a personal blog where I can share my favorite things, and continue to shine a light on nonprofits, and cause marketing campaigns to inspire others to give as they live.
